What the adjusted oncourt/offcourt Euroleague stats tell us

To clarify right at the beginning, after just 8 Euroleague games, oncourt/offcourt-stats should be taken with not just one, but ten thousand grains of salt. The main reason is small sample size. A player that is averaging ten minutes a game hasn’t even played 100 minutes in the whole Euroleague season, and a…

EUROLEAGUE’S RISING STAR
Martynas Gecevicius is a quite common name for those who regularly follow the international youth basketball tournaments. The 1988 born Lithuanian made the U18 Eurobasket all tournament first team in 2006, alongside tournament MVP Nicolas Batum, Miroslav Raduljica – a member of the Eurobasket 2009 Serbian senior squad – ,…

The European basketball transfer summer started slowly, but by the end of August, a large majority of the Euroleague rosters are already complete. Wasn’t it supposed to take a little bit longer? One of the two big remaining questions are A) the future whereabouts of Ricky Rubio, B) what surprise Olympiacos is going…

It would be wrong to draw early conclusions from the 2009 offseason in Euroleague basketball with more than two months to go before most domestic leagues start. Which is exactly why I’ll do it.

There is usually a topic, a tag which you can assign to a summer of basketball transfers.…

Playoff Preview III: Panathinaikos vs. Montepaschi

Posted 24 March 2009 | By J. | Categories: Euroleague, Montepaschi, Panathinaikos, notes | 2 Comments

The form of Panathinaikos is always a bit of a mistery. We remember how they marginally survived Top16 two years ago, only to go on to win the European triple crown. They cruised through the first group phase a year later before crashing out of the competition in Belgrade on Top16 Week 6. In 08/09, Panathinaikos was playing subpar basketball for most of the regular season, causing coach Zeljko Obradovic to erupt on the press conference after a Euroleague home game against Prokom Trefl Sopot. While the team’s reaction was not imminent, Top16 has however seen a different Panathinaikos, extremely strong on defence, clinically executing on offense, and hence beating Unicaja Malaga twice …

Lega A Gameday 6: Lottomatica Roma vs. Montepaschi Siena

Posted 22 November 2008 | By J. | Categories: Italian League, Montepaschi, Roma, game reports | No Comments
Fans of Italian basketball have not much to laugh about these days. The national team, olympic silver medalist back in 2004, will most likely not qualify for Eurobasket 2009, and on club level, Lega A has lost its status as one of Europe’s best leagues due to hugely disappointing results in both Euroleague

Euroleague Gameday 4: Panathinaikos vs. Montepaschi Siena

A lot has been written about Panathinaikos after the heavy loss to Barcelona a week ago, and how the star-studded roster is not working for coach Zeljko Obradovic. Well, the club certainly made a step in the right direction on Thursday, fighting off serious Final Four candidate Montepaschi Siena in maybe

Euroleague Gameday 3: Montepaschi Siena vs. Regal FC Barcelona

Two of Europe’s in-form teams were going up against each other in this one, and regarding intensity and tension, the game lived up to the hype. Barcelona went into the last quarter leading by six, before the hosts – fueled by new addition Henry Domercant – made the decisive fourth quarter
