Just another 09/10 Euroleague Update

If the powerful ACB/HEBA front manages to make its influence count and is able to prevent Jordi Bertomeu’s proposed Euroleague system from being set in stone, our efforts to cover the the story might be to no avail. But we’ll do it anyway, who knows what’s going to happen next.

There were clarifications this week about the handling of the new system in several domestic leagues. Firstly, according to Ballineurope, French ProA is different from all other leagues in assigning the Euroleague starting spots, not only for the ASVEL Villeurbanne wildcard. The French champion will receive the first B-licence of course, however, it is not the finalist that will receive another B-licence, but the regular season winner, which is in fact ASVEL. A nice way of upgrading the regular season and giving teams another goal to work for, apart from an advantage going into the playoffs, which in my opinion is not enough of an reward for a 30 plus X games regular season, and which can be neutralised by a single game.

The national rankings of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, which include Adrialeague results, seem to be the only domestic/regional rankings that will be respected by the new Euroleague system. The rankings of e.g. Italy, France and Germany do not seem to count for Euroleague qualification anymore, but they might be of importance for the EuroCup.

Lottomatica Roma and Virtus Bologna both went out in the quarter finals of the Lega A playoffs, but Roma is going to keep its A-licence. In fact, the failure of the bigs enables Italy more spots for the Euroleague next season: Benetton has already won at least the 3rd B-licence [qualification round] as they have the 2nd best regular season record of all semifinalists, so that they should finish 3rd in the final standings even if they lose their semifinal series. Between the two losing semifinalists, regular season record determines who is to be ranked higher in the final standings. The thing is, if one of Efes Pilsen/Fenerbahce wins the Turkish championship, which is extremely probable right now [both being up 2:0 in their respective semifinal series], Italy will have three direct starters, in case Montepaschi does not qualify for the playoff finals, even four.

Let’s just for one moment assume the probable, some might call it the inevitable:

1) Montepaschi wins the Italian championship
2) Efes Pilsen and Fenerbahce qualify for the finals in Turkey

The field of participants would look as follows.

Direct qualification:

A – Licences
1 CSKA Moscow 2 Panathinaikos Athens 3 Olympiacos Piraeus
4 Montepaschi Siena 5 Lottomatica Roma 6 Maccabi Tel Aviv
7 Zalgiris Kaunas 8 TAU Vitoria 9 FC Barcelona
10 Real Madrid 11 Unicaja Malaga 12 Efes Pilsen Istanbul
13 Fenerbahce Istanbul
B – Licences
14 French champion 15 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 16 Partizan Belgrade
17 Cibona Zagreb 18 Olimpija Ljubljana 19 German Champion
20 Asseco Prokom Sopot 21 Finalist Italy [MIL, TREV, BIELLA]
C – Licence
22 Wildcard

Qualification round:

Qualification round
23 Khimki Moscow 24 ASVEL Villeurbanne* 25 3rd Place Italy [TREV, MIL]
26 3rd Place Greece [ARIS, MAR] 27 Champion Belgium [Charleroi?] 28 BK Ventspils
29 Azovmash Mariupol 30 Wildcard France

*In case ASVEL wins the French championship, the 2nd placed team of the ProA regular season will take this spot

Read here and here in order to understand the system.

I had been misevaluating the qualification round a bit it seems. It looks quite makeable in this case. Khimki would be obvious favourites, followed by the 3rd placed teams from Greece and Italy, but it would make for very interesting games.

  1. Italy (4) and France (3) definitely don’t deserve this number of spots.

  2. What happens if Zadar wins the Croatian championship? I guess they get the spot of Cibona?

  3. @Christophe: Nope, Cibona will take 1st spot because of the Croatian domestic rankings. It was also said that Partizan and Union Olimpija will definitely play in the EL in 10/11 because they are already set for 1st place in that season due to past results. Buducnost_PG wrote on IBN that the Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian domestic rankings will definitely be respected by Jordi.

  5. Does Red Star from Belgrade – Serbia have any chance to play EL 09/10 qualification?

  6. Yes, if the wild card C-Licence not used by Lietuvos Ritas, is awarded to any on the eight teams that earn a spot in the qualification round.

The next in line is the Finalist from Serbia.

  7. But, teams from Serbia goes to Euroleague from adriatic league not for Serbian. So, the next team is Hemofarm not Red Star

  8. This article here sais that C-license will become a wild card and team with wild card will directly qualify to group stage. But i believe that team with WC will go to qualif. round, it wouldn’t make sense that let say team from France like Nancy would qualify directly while team like Khimki or Banneton would have to play qualifications.

  9. Maybe you are correct, it is just an assumption from my part.

What makes me believe that the wildcard is a direct qualification place is the following:
    1) From the official Euroleague press release: “If a team qualifies as Eurocup champion and later wins its national championship, the team would go to the Euroleague as national champion and the Eurocup C Licence would become a wild card. ” => It says the “EuroCup C-licence would become a wild-card”. The C-licence is a direct qualification spot for one year. For me, it sounds like the wildcard is a direct replacement for the C-licence, and it doesn’t sound as if there will be a shifting process and someone else gets the direct qualification spot.
    2) Euroleague will probably like the opportunity to get a club which they support directly into the competition, instead of having it go through the qualification round. After all, there is a good chance that club wouldn’t even make it through the qualification phase.
