Part 13 of our “23 (teams) in 230 (words)” Euroleague mini preview series deals with Olympiacos’ title-defending 2012/13 campaign.

Summary

“My unfulfilled wish in basketball is to coach a team consisting of five players who are 2 metres tall, run the floor, pressure the ball and take advantage of mismatches. That is my dream but it won’t be realized.”

Unfulfilled you say, Dusan Ivkovic?

For stretches during the 2011/12 season, Olympiacos came very close to matching Ivkovic’s ideal, say, with their third most-used Euroleague lineup: Vangelis Mantzaris (1.95), Vassilis Spanoulis (1.93), Kostas Papanikolaou (2.03), Giorgios Printezis (2.02), Kyle Hines (1.98). Ivkovic will not be around to oversee its further evolution. That will be left to Georgios Bartzokas, appointed with the task of establishing Olympiacos in the elite four, five of European basketball.

Bartzokas has a widely unaltered yet punctually improved roster at his disposal: Except for the departure of Marko Keselj (Valencia) and little-used Michalis Pelekanos (Aris) & Andreas Glyniadakis (Astana), all title-winning players stay put. Arriving are: Stratos Perperoglou (Panathinaikos), whose fine pre-season performances quickly silenced the skeptics, and Dimitrios Mavroeidis (Bilbao), one of the continent’s top offensive rebounders and easily capable of walking into two thirds of the Euroleague’s player rotations. Behind Joey Dorsey and Kyle Hines, however, minutes will be few and far between.

Olympiacos’ title run-in was, improbable as it may have been, based on a measurably exceptional defense that held Montepaschi at a 94.9 (four games) and CSKA & Barcelona at a 88.7 (two games) offensive rating. The offense, though, was one of the most one-player-dependent of the whole tournament and a not particularly effective one on top of that. That is where improvement is needed and, according to the projected numbers, is to be expected.
