09/10 Euroleague rosters revisited

with 8 comments

The European basketball transfer summer started slowly, but by the end of August, a large majority of the Euroleague rosters are already complete. Wasn’t it supposed to take a little bit longer? One of the two big remaining questions are A) the future whereabouts of Ricky Rubio, B) what surprise Olympiacos is going to come up with next. Patrick Beverley came completely out of the blue.

Here’s a collection of known Euroleague rosters, including qualification rounds. Faultlessness cannot be guaranteed, however, it should be okay to 99 percent. Teams not included are Orléans and Ventspils. I’ll try to add them later.

ARMANI JEANS MILANO

PG Morris Finley PG Hollis Price PG/SG Marco Mordente
SG/SF Alex Acker SG/PG Luca Vitali SG/SF Jeffrey Vigiani
SF Jonas Maciulis SF/PF Stefano Mancinelli
PF/SF Mike Hall PF/C Mason Rocca
C Marijonas Petravicius C/PF Maurice Taylor C Joey Beard

Milano’s latest addition is former Olympiacos and Barcelona swingman Alex Acker, who recently spent a season warming the Detroit Pistons’ and Los Angeles Clippers’ bench. Acker had a promising rookie season with Olympiacos in 06/07, but never managed to fulfill the expectations in Spain. After the signing of Morris Finley from Montepaschi, it is yet undecided whether or not Hollis Price is about to stay. Strong small forwards Jonas Maciulis and Stefano Mancinelli team up at the three spot.

ASSECO PROKOM

PG Daniel Ewing PG Tyrone Brazelton PG Tomasz Swietonski
SG David Logan SG/SF P. Zamojski
SF Qyntel Woods
SF Mateusz Kstrzewski
PF Ronnie Burrell
SF/PF Piotr Szczotka
C Adam Hrycaniuk C Adam Lapeta

Prokom managed to keep nearly all of its roster after reaching the Euroleague Top16 as well as winning the domestic championship. Nobody will ask for their record [2-14] in the Euroleague last season.

ASVEL VILLEURBANNE

PG Bobby Dixon PG Aymeric Jeanneau PG Antoine Eito
SG Mindaugas Lukauskis SG Kevin Joss Rauze
SF/SG Laurent Foirest SF/SG Ben Dewar
PF/SF Eric Campbell PF/SF Kristjan Kangur
C Curtis Borchardt C/PF Ali Traore

Amary Sy is a recent significant departure, but ASVEL looks ready to go in the Euroleague after making three big offseason signings in Borchardt, Lukauskis, and Dixon.

BARCELONA

PG Ricky Rubio [?] PG Jaka Lakovic PG Victor Sada
SG Juan Carlos Navarro SG/SF Roger Grimau
SG/SF Gianluca Basile SF Pete Mickeal SF Lubos Barton
PF Terence Morris C/PF Fran Vazquez PF Jordi Trias
C/PF Erazem Lorbek C Boniface N’Dong

Will he come or won’t he? Currently all the talk is about Ricky Rubio’s reported six year contract with the Catalans. If Rubio arrived, would Sada get the boot? Anyway, Barcelona once again buys a key player from CSKA, this time David Anderesen’s successor, Erazem Lorbek, who makes the frontcourt worlds stronger.

CAJA LABORAL

PG Marcelinho Huertas
PG/SG Pau Ribas
SG Carl English SG Brad Oleson
SF Walter Herrmann SF/SG Fernando San Emeterio
PF Mirza Teletovic PF Lior Eliyahu
C Tiago Splitter C/PF Stanko Barac

Nothing is like it has been before at Caja Laboral, former TAU. With the departure of Pablo Prigioni to Real goes TAU’s heart and soul, even if this roster figures to be among the top four in ACB once again. The ACB debut of Lior Eliyahu is going to be interesting, as well as the high scoring combination of English and Oleson on the two spot. Tiago Splitter, without Prigioni, will have to work hard for every single bucket.

CSKA MOSCOW

PG JR Holden
PG/SG Anton Ponkrashov
SG Trajan Langdon
PG/SG Zoran Planinic SG/PG Alexey Shved
SF Ramunas Siskauskas
SG/SF Victor Keyru SF/PF Nikita Kurbanov
PF Matjaz Smodis
PF/SF Victor Khryapa SF/PF A.Vorontsevich
PF/C Aleksandar Kaun C Dimtriy Sokolov

CSKA looks extremely weak on the center position, but pure class on the one to four starting slots should be more than enough to make this team a Euroleague quarter finalist. But more? We will see.

CIBONA

PG/SG Jamont Gordon
PG/SG Vedran Princ
SG/PG Antonio Graves SG Goran Vrbanc SG Robert Troha
SF Marin Rozic SF Bojan Bogdanovic SF Toni Brnas
PF Vedran Vukusic PF Tomislav Zubcic
C Dalibor Bagaric
PF/C Luksa Andric PF/C Leon Radosevic

EFES PILSEN

PG Kerem Tunceri PG/SG Ender Arslan
SG Igor Rakocevic SG Charles Smith SG Sinan Guler
SG/SF Bootsy Thornton SF Preston Shumpert
PF/SF Bostjan Nachbar PF/C Kerem Gonlum
PF/C Kaya Peker C Mario Kasun

Efes made big splashes this offseason, signing Rakocevic and Nachbar. However, both are rather defense-intolerant, and one must wonder whether or not chemistry is going to be an issue.

EWE BASKETS OLDENBURG

PG Jason Gardner PG/SG Daniel Hain
SG/PG Je’Kel Foster SG Marko Buljevic SG Acha Njei
SF/SG Rickey Paulding SF Josh Carter
PF Milan Majstorovic PF Jasmin Perkovic PF Daniel Strauch
C Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje C/PF Marko Scekic

Germany’s champion is a Euroleague newcomer, and they’re trying to succeed with basically last season’s championship roster, which is led by playmaker Jason Gardner and volume-scoring swingman Rickey Paulding.

FENERBAHCE

PG Will Solomon PG/SG Lynn Greer PG Hakan Demirel
SG Tarence Kinsey SG Omer Onan SG/PG Damir Mrsic
SF/SG Gordan Giricek SF/PF Emir Preldzic
PF Mirsad Turkcan PF/SF Rasim Basak
C Oguz Savas C Omer Asik C Semih Erden

Another headline-maker this offseason, as it seems the 2010 World Championship has something to do with it. Lynn Greer joins from Olympiacos to form a high-scoring backcourt alongside Solomon, Kinsey, Mrsic and workhorse Onan. Center position is deep again, but with Turkcan, Solomon, Greer and Giricek on one team, will they be able to build chemistry?

KHIMKI MOSCOW

PG Carlos Cabezas PG Raul Lopez
SG Keith Langford SG Vitaly Fridzon
SF Kelly McCarty SF Sergey Toporov
PF Paulius Jankunas PF Fedor Dimitriev PF/C Petr Gubanov
C Robertas Javtokas C Timofey Mozgov

Sergio Scariolo brought in Lopez and Cabezas, who he promptly appointed to the Spanish national team. Sergey Toporov is the latest signing to complete the roster. Paulius Jankunas will be expected to do a lot on the power forward position, and a lot will depend on whether or not he will be able to deliver. An interesting team without a real volume scorer, but with several important pieces.

LIETUVOS RYTAS

PG Bojan Popovic PG Marius Prekevicius PG Evaldas Dainys [?]
SG Steponas Babrauskas SG Martynas Gecevicius
SF Arturas Jomantas SF Justinas Sinica
PF/SF Donatas Zavackas PF Dejan Borovnjak
PF/C Milko Bjelica C Aron Baynes C Michailas Anisimovas

Rytas is going through tough times financially, so quite naturally this Euroleague season is going to be a hard one for them.

MACCABI TEL AVIV

PG Andrew Wisniewski PG/SG Raviv Limonad
SF/SG Alan Anderson SG/PG Derrick Sharp
SF Chuck Eidson SF Guy Pnini
C/PF Stephane Lasme
SF/PF David Bluthenthal
C D’Or Fischer C/PF Maciej Lampe C/PF Yaniv Green

Maccabi wants to rejoin Europe’s elite with a revamped roster that features EuroCup-MVP Chuck Eidson, Croatian league MVP Alan Anderson, and Partizan’s shotblocking sensation Stephane Lasme. However, starting point guard Andrew Wisniewski is hardly a Final Four calibre playmaker. What was Pini thinking?

MONTEPASCHI SIENA

PG Terrell McIntyre PG/SG Nikolaos Zisis
SF/SG David Hawkins SG Henry Domercant SG/SF Marco Carraretto
SF/SG Romain Sato SF/SG David Moss
PF Shaun Stonerook PF/C Tomas Ress
C Benjamin Eze C/PF Ksystof Lavrinovic C Luca Lechtaler

Once again, against all expectations, Siena was able to keep all key players except Rimantas Kaukenas [to Real Madrid], while adding Milano’s one-on-one talent David Hawkins, who will add more scoring power to the roster. Siena is to be calculated with.

OLYMPIACOS

PG Theodoros Papaloukas PG Milos Teodosic PG Patrick Beverley
SG/SF Von Wafer SG/PG Yotam Halperin
SF Josh Childress SF Panagiotis Vasilopoulos
SF/PF Linas Kleiza PF Zoran Erceg [?] C/PF Loukas Mavrokefalidis
C Ioannis Bouroussis C Nikola Vujcic C Sofoklis Schortsanitis

Olympiacos made a lot of noise in the offseason, once again going on shopping tour on the NBA market and coming home with shooter Von Wafer and Lithuanian comboforward Linas Kleiza, who figures to start at the four. If Zoran Erceg gets indeed loaned to another team, the reds are without a pure power forward. However, highlight of the offseason was the signing of relatively unknown American point guard Patrick Beverley, who played in the Ukrainian B-league last season. Is he the reason why they boxed the 3+3 rule through the instances?

PANATHINAIKOS

PG/SG Dimitris Diamantidis
PG Sarunas Jasikevicius PG Nick Calathes
PG/SG Vassilis Spanoulis SG Drew Nicholas
SF Stratos Perperoglou SF/SG Milenko Tepic
PF Antonis Fotsis PF/C Kostas Tsartsaris
C Nikola Pekovic C/PF Mike Batiste C Giorgi Shermadini

Panathinaikos added young Greek-American point guard Nick Calathes as well as Serbian point forward Milenko Tepic, while Dusan Kecman and Nikos Chatzivrettas had to leave. A nearly unchanged roster for the Euroleague champion.

PARTIZAN

PG/SG Aleksandar Rasic PG Vukasin Akelsic
SG Petar Bozic SG Stefan Sinovec
SF/PF Jan Vesely SF/PF S. Milosevic SF Aleksandar Mitrovic
PF Dejan Milojevic PF/C Zarko Rakocevic PF Sava Lesic
C Aleks Maric C Slavko Vranes

Partizan is still looking for a high volume scorer on the two spot, probably American, while Jan Vesely will try to adjust to a bigger role on the team. Center Aleks Maric will start as well as Dejan Milojevic, who is expected to lead this team into Top16.

REAL MADRID

PG Pablo Prigioni PG/SG Sergio Llull
SG Louis Bullock SG Rimantas Kaukenas
SG/SF Travis Hansen SG/SF Sergi Vidal SF/PF Vladimir Dasic
PF Jorge Garbajosa PF Novica Velickovic
PF/C Felipe Reyes C Darius Lavrinovic C T. Van den Spiegel

This depth chart is incomplete, as tecnically, Jeremiah Massey, Marko Tomas, Axel Hervelle and Lazaros Papadopoulos are all still on the roster. However, none of the four is expected to remain with Ettore Messina’s new team. Oh well. Anyway, the signings of Prigioni and Vidal leads this team on a new level, and the duel with Barca will definitely be worth watching.

UNICAJA MALAGA

PG Omar Cook PG Joseph Gomis
SG Taquan Dean
SG Saul Blanco SG Berni Rodriguez
SF/SG Jiri Welsch SF/PF Carlos Jimenez
PF Giorgios Printezis PF Guillem Rubio
C Robert Archibald PF/C Joel Freeland

Unicaja has to do without Thomas Kelati and Marcus Haislip, the team’s two best scorers last season, as well as local hero Carlos Cabezas.

UNION OLIMPIJA

PG Vlado Ilievski PG Dusan Djordjevic
SG Saso Ozbolt SG Jaka Klobucar
SF/SG Matt Walsh SG/SF Pawel Kikowski
SF/PF Edin Bavcic
C Vladimir Golubovic

Olimpija, having to do with a heavily reduced budget, already made a big offseason signing in Belgian league MVP Matt Walsh, as they are trying to cope with the key departures of Jasmin Hukic [Benetton] and Mirza Begic [Zalgiris].

VIRTUS ROMA

PG/SG Ibrahim Jaaber PG Jacopo Giachetti
SG/SF Kennedy Winston
SF Luigi Datome SG/SF Ricky Minard
PF Andre Hutson PF Hervé Touré PF/SF Alesandro Tonolli
PF/C Angelo Gigli C Andrea Crosariol

The Slovenian star duo Sani Becirovic and Primosz Brezec has left the team. Coming in to fill the void at shooting guard is former Panathinaikos, Turk Telekom and Real Madrid player Kennedy Winston while the club will try to bounce back from a truly disastrous 08/09 season that burned many bridges.

ZALGIRIS

PG Mantas Kalnietis PG Zygimatas Janavicius PG Sarunas Vasiliauskas
SG Marcus Brown SG Arturas Milaknis SG Martynas Pocius
SF/SG Dainius Salenga
PF Travis Watson PF Tadas Klimavicius PF Povilas Butkevicius
C Mirza Begic C Pavelas Cukinas

Under new ownership, Zalgiris has been very active in August, getting back Marcus Brown and Mantas Kalnietis as well as signing power forward Travis Watson and center Mirza Begic. Top16 suddenly doesn’t look out of reach anymore.

Qualification Round: [Missing: Orléans and Ventspils]

ALBA BERLIN

PG Steffen Hamann PG/SG Rashad Wright
SG/SF Immanuell McElroy SG Julius Jenkins SG Oskar Fassler
SF/SG Lee Cummard SF/PF Philip Zwiener
PF Kenan Bajramovic PF Dragan Dojcin
C Adam Chubb C/PF Blagota Sekulic

ALBA did not re-sign Casey Jacobsen but went for the cheaper but also more risky Lee Cummard instead, who is coming straight out of college. While Wright, Sekulic and Dojcin all got contract extensions, the acquisition of do-it-all power forward Kenan Bajramovic is by far the BBL’s most spectacular offseason move.

ARIS

PG Keydren Clark PG Curtis Stinson PG Nikos Argyropoulos
SG/SF Nikos Chatzivrettas SG/PG Spyros Mourtos
SF/SG Jeremy Richardson SF Kostas Papanikolaou SF/PF L.Chrysikopoulos
PF/SF Michalis Kakiouzis PF/SF Nikos Barlos
PF/C Dimos Dikoudis C Andrew Betts C Gaios Skordilis

Notes: Released SF/PF Ira Newble in August; Signed PF/SF Michalis Kakiouzis as a replacement

Aris added a lot of experience in Chatzivrettas, Dikoudis, and most recently, Kakiouzis. One of the remaining questions is the future of talented small forward Kostas Papanikolaou, who is reportedly chased after by Olympiacos, and, consequently, Panathinaikos.

BENETTON TREVISO

SG/PG Davor Kus PG Steven Markovic PG/SG Roberto Rullo
SG Gary Neal SG Daniel Hackett
.
PF/SF Jasmin Hukic PF CJ Wallace
C Sandro Nicevic PF/C Donatas Motiejunas

Davor Kus is hardly a pure playmaker, so one has to see how the backcourt combination with volume scorer Gary Neal is going to work. The most remarkable signing is clearly the addition of Lithuania’s forward/center hope Donatas Motiejunas, one of the big European basketball talents.

LE MANS

PG Zach Wright PG Antoine Diot
SG Dewarick Spencer
SF/SG Maleye N’Doye SG/SF C.Lombahé-Kahudi
PF/SF Marc Salyers PF/C Thierry Rupert PF/SF Antoine Gomis
C JP Batista C Guillaume Yango C Negueba Samake

Le Mans is looking to have success with Roanne’s former championship-winning duo of Dewarick Spencer and Marc Salyers, in combination with the wild but talented playmaker Zach Wright.

MAROUSSI

PG Billy Keys PG Fanis Koumbouras PG/SG Marios Batis
PG/SG Jamon Gordon SG Giorgios Diamantopoulos
SF/SG Michalis Pelekanos SF/PF Pat Calathes
PF/SF Kosta Kaimakoglou PF Dimitris Mavroeidis
PF/C Jared Homan C Levon Kendall

Maroussi lost the scary center tandem Glyniadakis – Mavrofekalidis to Olympiacos, but got Michalis Pelekanos on loan in return instead. While the successful power forward combo of Kaimakoglou and Mavroeidis is staying, the center duo of Homan and Kendall is sericeable but hardly game-changing, and Jamon Gordon simply isn’t good enough for Euroleague level.

SPIROU CHARLEROI

PG Jerry Johnson PG Jonathan Tabu PG/SG Gerrit Major
SG Justin Hamilton SG/PG Chris Hill
SF/SG Dwayne Broyles SG/SF Nick Jacobson
PF Wes Wilkinson PF/C Len Matela PF Sascha Massot
C Jure Lalic C Andre Riddick

Charleroi kept most of its championship-winning roster and is not going to back down in the Euroleague qualification. A nicely balanced team that should benefit off of having played together for a long time, especially this early in the season. Problematic: There’s a new coach. And: Is Nick Jacobson a worthy successor for Matt Walsh?
